30 Days of September; a critical issue
In the play “30 Days in September”, one major issue that is brought up by the playwright is the issue of child sexual abuse. The protagonist of the play, Mala and also her mother Shanti faced the problem of being sexually molested by one man which is Mala’s uncle and also Shanta’s brother, Vinay. The tragedy affected Mala badly. She has become a girl who cannot love a guy. She only wanted the pleasure of sexual but not loves. Although sexual pleasure is pain for her, she cannot escape from being ‘used’ by man. This is the psychological effect of being sexually molested by her uncle. As for her mother, the tragedy had made her a woman who cannot sexually satisfy her own husband. Her husband left her for another woman and claimed that Shanta is a ‘frozen woman’. As a way escapism from the pain and suffer that she felt, Shanta make herself lost in the world of God. By being a good servant to the God, she felt nothing; no pain, no pleasure. From the play, I can see that a girl who is sexually abused will faced a traumatic life for a very long time as long as no help is given to her.
